Black Bear Wilderness Area

Black Bear Wilderness Area is an avid hiker's dream in Central Florida.

If you are looking for a long hike among Florida's natural landscape, visit Black Bear Wilderness Area. Visitors will find a roughly 7.1 mile loop trail along the St. Johns River. This is a remote trail and you will find slopes, tree roots, and other uneven terrain - proper hiking boots and attire are highly recommended, and be sure to bring plenty of water for your entire party. The trail system stays dry most of the year, but it is located within the floodplain of the St. Johns River and may experience significant flooding during the rainy season (summer). If you are quiet and observant, you may encounter wildlife such as white-tailed deer, swallow-tailed kite, American alligators, river otters, and the Florida black bear. At mile 3, there is a primitive tent campsite available for up to 6 people, with a permit. The campsite is only accessible from the trail. Leashed dogs are allowed on the trail.
