Parks and Conservation LandsFreedom Park commemorates the Gullah Geechee Community in Jacksonville. The monument in the center of the park honors the Cosmo and Gullah Geechee, as well as PTSD Veterans. Gullah Geechee are direct descendants of slaves who settled in the Coastal Lowlands, from North Carolina to North Florida. The single largest concentration of Gullah Geechee is in Jacksonville. Freedom Park is located just across the street from the St. Johns River, in which the Gullah Geechee have deep-rooted fishing traditions.
