Nestled between Naval Station Mayport and the St. Johns River, the small community of Mayport has much to offer families looking to trek off the beaten path. Located at the mouth of the St. Johns and just 25 miles east of Jacksonville, it’s actually so much more than what some may dub “an old fishing village” — it’s brimming with hidden gems that are perfect for families and visitors alike!
Only accessible by the beautiful A1A, trekking to Mayport is a scenic drive full of natural wonder. Before heading out, hit up the cozy Zap Cat Espresso Bar for a coffee, tucked away just inside the historic Atlantic Theatre in Atlantic Beach.
Once in Mayport, spend the morning exploring the some of the lush parks. David Wayne Pack Park houses the recently opened William “Bill” Gulliford Jr. Community Center and a new playground (with a play pirate ship!) perfect for young mates looking to explore — one of many amazing playgrounds in and around Jax! Then take a peek at a truly historic lighthouse, the St. Johns River Light, before grabbing lunch at the Safe Harbor Seafood Market and Restaurant. We all know it’s hard to come by good kid-friendly restaurants, and this is an excellent spot to bring the kids and enjoy the view of the river — along with some local Mayport shrimp!
After lunch, shake things up a bit and take a ride on the St. Johns River Ferry over to Ft. George Island and back for some stunning views from the water. This ferry is one of the last passenger ferry boats in the Sunshine State and has been in operation since 1874.
On your way back to the Bold City, stop for a sweet treat at Pie Heaven on Mayport Road, a quaint cottage serving up a variety of pies, both sweet and savory, comprised of the finest seasonal ingredients.
